Bearhole Farms was started in October of 2015 by Cindy Stevens and CJ Mears. They operate a 3,000 hole deep water trough Aquaponic system growing a variety of leafy greens. Great Romaines, Gourmet Mixes, Swiss Chard and lots of other additions. There is also a flood and drain system with a 40 dutch bucket system that grows tomatoes year round. Bearhole Farms supply various local restaurants, CSA along with a Retail Store at the farm, open Saturday 9-1 year-round. The 1st Saturday of every month is a Farmers Market 9-1 all year.
Harvest times depend on the variety of lettuce that have been seeded. Many of the Romaine varieties can be harvested in approximately 47-55 days while some of the Gourmet Mixes can be harvested in 32-45 days. The shelf-life on some of the Romaine varieties is approximately 27 days under the right conditions. Bearhole Farms strives to maintain an eco-friendly operation. The wastes are composted along with the biosolids that are pulled off daily. They are used for the vegetable gardens at the farm. In addition, Bearhole Farms is powered by the sun with as extensive bank of solar panels. Cindy grew up in the restaurant business. She was the Chef and Owner of "Fishbones" in South Bethany. Growing veggies and working with local chef's is like coming home to her. She is the owner/operator of Natural Creations Landscaping and Garden Center. So you can pick up annuals, perennials, and great lettuce all at Bearhole Farms and Natural Creations. CJ is retired with a background in food safety and Food Microbiology. He and his wife spent 5 years in Southern Costa Rica cultivating a 2 acre property with tropical fruits and flowers.
